A sedentary lifestyle and physical inactivity have become the most common habits in contemporary society. Worldwide, it is estimated that approximately 60% of the population is within this group, in which activities such as sitting down in front of a screen at work, when driving, and when watching television, are common.
According to the 2020 National Health Survey, 86.7% of Chileans do not perform any type of physical activity. Of these people, 90% of women is sedentary, and 83% of men over the age of 15 are sedentary, thus placing Chile in the third place of the obesity ranking, behind Mexico and the United States.
According to the 2018 National Survey on Physical Activity and Sports Habits, conducted on individuals aged 18 and older, 81.3% of people are physically inactive, with lack of time being the predominant reason for not practicing any physical activity and/or sport. A difference of two percentage points between men and women – 68% and 70%, respectively – was recorded in this survey.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared that Brazil is the country with the most cases of sedentariness: 47% of its population shows insufficient physical activity, followed by Costa Rica, Argentina, and Colombia, with 46%, 41% and 36%, respectively. On the other hand, Ecuador, Chile, and Uruguay are the Latin American countries with the lowest rates of sedentariness, at 27%, 26%, and 22%, respectively.
